Rev. Carlos H. Coop, 81, of the Chestnut Grove Community in Cumberland County, Kentucky, passed away on Tuesday, August 19, 2014 at the Cumberland County Hospital in Burkesville, Kentucky. He was born in Cumberland County, Kentucky on Tuesday, September 13, 1932, the son of the late David Estell and Eunice Cross Coop.

He was a farmer and worked at Ford Motor Company before being called into the ministry and licensed to preach in May of 1958. His first charge was five churches in Livingston, Tennessee. The remainder of his ministry was in Kentucky. He began four new churches during his ministry.

He was a 1964 graduate of Lindsey Wilson College, a 1968 graduate of Campbellsville College and a graduate of the United Methodist Pastor’s School at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.

He was accepted into the Burkesville Masonic Lodge #413 F. and A. M. in September 1953 and received a 60 year pin as a master mason in September 2013. He attained the level of Royal Arch and was also a member of the Scottish Rite and received the 32nd degree. He and his wife joined the Order of the Eastern Star at Campbellsville, Kentucky in 1967. When he returned to Cumberland County in June of 1982, he became very active in the Burkesville Chapter #380 Order of the Eastern Star. He served as chaplain for several years for both the Masonic Lodge and the Eastern Star. He was presented with a framed certificate stating, “On February 15, 2014, let it be known that in appreciation to his dedication to our chapter, we have unanimously appointed Rev. Carlos H. Coop as our Grand Father of Burkesville Chapter #380.”

He retired from full-time ministry in June of 1982, but continued to minister to the residents of Cumberland County. In 2009 he officiated in 31 funeral services.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nina Lee Flowers Coop, whom he married on Monday, March 14, 1949, his brothers, James Ruel Coop and Larry Coop and his sisters, Eunice Guffey and Euzell Coop Bryant.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn Helen and Billy Dean Milby of Burkesville, his brother, Rev. Howard Coop of Lancaster, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted on Saturday, August 23, 2014 in the Memory Chapel of Norris-New Funeral Home with Bro. Lanny Garner, Bro. Charles Huddleston and Bro. Greg Wells officiating. Burial was in the Chestnut Grove Cemetery in Cumberland County, Kentucky. Casket bearers were Rev. R. Thomas Wilson, Bro. Lanny Garner, Bro. David McCarty, Bro. Charles Huddleston, Bro. Greg Wells and Bro. Gary Cash. Honorary casket bearers were all ministers and their wives, Dr. Chris Konsavage, Dr. Robert Flowers and Dr. Sam Rice.

In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to the Chestnut Grove Cemetery Fund.
