Junior Lee Hurt, 86, of Piper City, Illinois, passed away on Sunday, November 17, 2013 at his home, surrounded by his family following a three month illness. He was born on June 7, 1927 in Frankfort, Indiana to Charles and Mamie (Hurt) Hurt. His childhood was spent in Illinois. He attended school in Thawville, Illinois. He worked as a tool and die maker for Ropers in Kankakee, Illinois for 25 years and Ford Central school custodian for 20 years. He married Lula Geneva Sorey on June 7, 1950 in Pontiac, Illinois. She survives.
Surviving children are Gary Dean (Rose) Hurt of Pontiac, Illinois, Debra Eileen (Mike) Brown of Pontiac, Illinois and Randy Steven Hurt of Piper City, Illinois, six grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren, one brother, Harold (Bonnie) Maxey of South Carolina and three sisters, Imogene (Jack) Jones of Bourbonnais, Illinois, Nancy (Reid) Brewington of Kentucky and JoAnn McCoy of Piper City, Illinois. Junior was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Vicki Brand, a brother, Bob, and two sisters, Nealie Hendershott and Priscilla Keck.
He was of the Methodist Faith. Junior was a WWII Army Veteran. He had also lived in Herscher for several years and moved to Piper City in 1959. Junior was an avid NASCAR fan. He also enjoyed watching basketball, baseball games and working with his hands.
Services were held Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at the United Methodist Church, Piper City with Rev. Elizabeth Reis and Rev. Sandy Onken officiating. Burial was in the Brenton Cemetery, Piper City. Military rites by the Gibb Post 588 Piper City American Legion. Memorials may be made to the Donor’s Choice.
