James Bernard “Jim” Coe, Sr., of Jasper, Florida, formerly of Burkesville, Kentucky, passed away early on Saturday, May 27, 2017 at Lake City Medical Center in Lake City, Florida, following a brief illness, having attained the age of 87 years, 4 months and 25 days. He was born in Burnside, Kentucky on Thursday, January 2, 1930, the son of the late Escar and Betty Jane Irvin Coe.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by the love of his life, Emily Jo Officer Coe, whom he married on Friday, July 13, 1951 and a half-brother, Escar Coe, Jr.

Jim’s personality was a combination of many characters. He had a dry sense of humor which left you scratching your head when you walked away wondering, did he mean what he just said or did he just say what he meant. He laughed often and loved much and in return was loved deeply by the many students he taught over the years. He moved to Jasper from Kentucky in 1960 at the urging of Dr. Wade Norris who was instrumental in getting him a job teaching and coaching. Coach Coe went on to work for the Hamilton County School System in the capacity of guidance counselor and administrator. Jasper was lucky to have him. Jim earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Western Kentucky University and later received his Master’s Degree through the University of Florida. He was always faithful to his Kentucky Wildcats though. Jim loved to play golf, watch western’s on TV and eat, yes eat. Mr. Coe was a veteran of the United States Army and served his country honorably during the Korean Conflict. Jim was a longtime member of Jasper First Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his son, James Bernard Coe, Jr. and his wife Beth of Flagstaff, Arizona; his daughter, Nancy J. “Nan” Coe Hamm and her husband Tommy of Jennings, Florida; one brother, Dr. Harold I. Coe, Sr. and his wife Jean of Windermere, Florida.; two sisters-in law, Nancy Buchanan of Burkesville, and Joyce Coe of Jamestown; three grandchildren, Emily Carter Murphy (Alex), Tommy Hamm II (Abby) and Lesley Richard (Jason); two great grandchildren, Brooks Hamm and Asa Hamm. Also surviving is Sarah Mitchell, caregiver and member of the family.

A graveside service for James Bernard “Jim” Coe, Sr. will be held on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. (C.D.S.T.) at the Burkesville Cemetery in Burkesville, Kentucky. Burial will be in the Burkesville Cemetery.
